Bigger Fines For Those Who Fly Tip

In a bid to tackle waste crime around the country, the government has announced that householders will be liable for fines of up to £400 if they don’t make sure they give household waste to a licensed carrier.

The aim is to help drive down the incidents of fly-tipping, which between 2016 and 2017 cost councils in England £57.7 million – with about two-thirds of all waste fly-tipped containing household items.

“Fly-tipping is an unacceptable blight on our landscapes. Many people do not realise they have a legal duty to look up waste carriers and we want councils to step up and inform their residents.

“We must all take responsibility and make sure our waste does not end up in the hands of criminals who will wilfully dump it and these new powers will help us to crack down on rogue waste carriers,” environment minister Therese Coffey said.
